A door can change the whole room

Jeff does barn-style doors. He starts with the opening, then the style, then the visible hardware. The room comes along after, and so far it always has.

Meet Jeff

Jeff grew up in Dallas and moved to Bentonville, Arkansas. He is proud to be from Texas and will tell you so inside the first minute. He is also proud to live in Arkansas, which he will tell you in the second.

He has been hanging doors for a long time. Ask him how long and he will say, “Which one?” He remembers his first. He is happy to tell you about it.

Jeff arrives early, brings his own level, and stays until the door has settled in. Sometimes that is a few minutes. Sometimes it is the afternoon.

Bring your idea

A photo of the opening and a style you like can start the conversation. Add your town and what you hope to change. Jeff will have questions about the opening, the light, and the wall beside it. He will ask them gently. He will also ask them again on Sunday.

Craft standards

The anatomy of a door that glides for years. Jeff will be there for them.

A sliding door weighs between 80 and 220 pounds. Quiet, effortless movement comes down to structural mounting and thoughtful joinery.

Jeff is still reviewing this. He has notes.

Structure

Kiln-dried solid timber

Hollow-core doors telegraph sound and box-store softwood slabs frequently warp under indoor winter heating. Kiln-dried hardwood such as white oak, American walnut, or clear fir stays far more stable. Which species suits your room is worth settling early. Jeff will have a favorite. He will say he does not.

Mounting

Solid header ledger beam

A heavy door should never hang from drywall anchors. A continuous solid header board anchored into several framing studs gives the rail a flat, rigid mounting plane and prevents sag. Whether your wall needs one is a site question. Jeff will tap it and listen.

Hardware

Machined bearing rollers

Sealed ball bearings in the rollers are what buy a quiet, single-finger glide; dry or open bearings rumble. Soft-close dampers at each end stop the door banging into the stops. Which hardware is on the table is a question for Jeff. He will want to hear the rollers first.

Alignment

Concealed mortise floor stay

Something has to stop the door swinging at the bottom. A slot routed into the underside of the slab, riding over a low guide pin, avoids the channels and brackets that cross a walkway. Which approach suits your floor is worth asking about. Jeff will get down on it.

The crew

The people who show up early.
