Barn-door adjustments

Describe an existing sliding door that rubs, feels awkward, or no longer moves the way you expect. Jeff can usually hear it from the driveway.

Common starting points
  • Rubbing and clearance concerns
  • Track and guide assessment
  • Repair or replacement discussion

Start with what you notice

A scrape at one point, a new noise, or a change in movement is useful information. You do not need to know the cause before describing the problem. Jeff would like to hear it in your own words, and then in the door’s.

Give the existing setup some context

Include the door and hardware details if you have them, when the issue began, and whether anything nearby has changed. A view of the whole opening helps put the close-up details in context. Jeff will ask how the door has been sleeping. Answer however you like.

Confirm the next step

Repair and adjustment visits are included as many times as the door needs. The condition and compatibility of the existing parts determine what can be agreed. Jeff will return to check. He does not consider this a favor.

What affects the estimate?

  • Cause of the movement or fit problem
  • Door and hardware condition
  • Available replacement parts and adjustment scope
  • Number of return visits (all of them are included)

A written scope should identify the work, responsibilities, exclusions, and agreed finish. Confirm availability and commercial terms directly. Jeff will confirm the rest, and then confirm it again on Sunday.

Before the first conversation

What happens when the door moves? Describe any rubbing, noise, or change in movement and share the existing door and hardware details if known. Jeff would like to hear it described in your own words.

Keep photos ready to attach in your email or text application. This website does not upload attachments. Jeff would like a lot of them.

Common questions

Can an existing barn door be adjusted?

The existing setup needs to be assessed before a repair can be promised. Describe the symptoms, when they started, and any known door or hardware details. Jeff recommends not apologizing to the door. He has tried it. It did not help.

What should I photograph?

A full view of the door, the track, the floor guide, and the area where the problem occurs. This preview does not upload photos; keep them for the later conversation. Jeff will ask to see the door at different times of day.

Clearances & fit

What to check before choosing a door.

A sliding barn door needs space to travel and a solid surface to hang from. Here are the four checks to make on your opening.

01

Opening, trim & overlap

Record the opening and the outside of the casing separately

Measure clear opening width at the top, middle, and bottom, and height at both sides from the finished floor. Record the outside casing dimensions and projection. Choose overlap and final slab size only after checking the selected door and hardware instructions.

02

Headroom & mounting height

Keep opening, casing, slab top, and rail datum distinct

Record floor-to-ceiling or lowest obstruction height and floor-to-top-of-casing height. Hardware instructions specify their own reference point for roller clearance and rail mounting height. There is no universal six-inch requirement.

03

Travel & obstructions

Measure the full travel path on the intended side

Measure available wall run and note switches, handles, baseboard, outlets, furniture, corners, and the opposite face of the opening. Check full opening and closing travel against the chosen rail, stops, soft-close equipment, and guide geometry.

04

Floor & bottom guide

Check the highest finished-floor point along the entire travel

Record floor variation and rugs or future flooring. Required floor gap and guide engagement come from the selected system. Some guides need a routed groove; others do not. Confirm the approved guide and mounting method before altering the slab or floor.

Not sure if your opening has the clearance?

Snap a photo showing the doorway and the entire wall next to it. Include it when you message Jeff and he can check the layout. He will have already looked at it twice.
